Southern New England Chapter Members Danny and Eileen Ross, Chris and Corrine Johnson, Wes and Gail Van Dine, Charlie and Kathy Hand, Paul and Betty Reisbeck as well as Bette and Lee Heinzman attended the 54^th Annual Antique and Classic Boat Show at the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, NY the weekend of August 3-5, 2018.  Other than being hot and slightly humid, the weather was perfect for a boat show!

A very nice evening reception was held on Thursday, August 2^nd which was sponsored by The Thousand Island Chapter of ACBS.  This was a great opportunity to renew old friendships and make new ones and to watch some of the boats for the show arriving.  The sunset on the St. Lawrence River was spectacular!

The show opened to the general public on Friday and even though the crowd was small for a weekday, the grounds were busy as was the flea market across the street and the vendors that were set up on the street (i.e., several wineries, food trucks, artists, etc.).  It was great to just walk around and look at everything and eat!  There were no formal activities planned for Friday evening so you were on your own for dinner or sight-seeing, going out for a boat ride or walking through the town of Clayton as many of the shops stayed open.

The show opened at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday and even with a slight breeze, it was still HOT!  I believe there were 82 boats registered on both land and water and of those 82 approximately 60 were being judged – so the judges had their work cut out for them.  Wes and Chris were part of the judging team. There was also “Hagerty Youth” judging and it was great to see the kids participating.   The crowd was steady throughout the day and the flea market and the concession stands on the street continued to draw crowds. There was also a number of speaker forums that you could attend.

The boat auction conducted by Antique Boat America began at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday and even though the number of boats being auctioned was smaller than in past years, there was still a goodly number that were “hammered down” by the auctioneer!  The Clipper Inn in Clayton provided the “heavy nibbles” on Saturday evening.

Brunch on Sunday was catered again by the Clipper Inn and as usual was very good.  Once brunch was finished, Rebecca Hopfinger, Executive Director of the Antique Boat Museum welcomed the crowd to the awards ceremony and then turned the program over to Chief Judge, Brian Gagnon.  Brian explained the judging procedure to the audience and introduced the judges that were still in attendance – then it was on to the awards!

Southern New England Chapter Members did very well in the awards presentation! Congratulations to Chris Johnson, who was named the Fred Thompson Boater of the Year.  Chris received a standing ovation from the assembly; Wes and Gail Van Dine also won a 1^st place award – Preserved Classic Utility.  Their boat was a 1946 Gar Wood Ensign named JAZZ.  Following the awards ceremony, the boat parade began – it was a great end to a perfect show!

Friday July 13, 2018 kicked off the 34^th Annual Southern New England Chapter Antique and Classic Boat Show at the CT River Museum in Essex, CT.  The weather was just about perfect – slight breeze and not too much humidity!  Boats started arriving around noon and with the help of Mike Sorensen, Bill Sorensen, Danny Ross and Ted Boynton, we were able to get everyone in the water (or on land) with little or no stress!

The museum’s exhibit “Thirsty River – 400 Years of Drink, Life and Reform in the Connecticut River Valley” was open to SNEC Show participants.  The Hogo Rum Bar featured rare and specialty rums and drinks and was quite a hit.  The bar was run by Steve Gencarella, the Museum’s Resident Folklorist and he was more than happy to talk about the rums and spirts of the Connecticut River Valley.  I saw many people with rum drinks in their hands!

This year we decided to forego our typical cookout and instead went with “The Big Green Truck Pizza” Company!  Some of our chapter members had been to other events where they were present so we decided to try them.  The pizza truck is circa 1946-48 and comes completely equipped with brick oven, tables, etc.  It was very interesting to see this all unfold in the parking lot!

Well – you won’t believe how many combinations you can come up with on a pizza pie!  Some of the favorites were mashed potato, caramelized onions and bacon, (a crowd favorite), BBQ chicken, clam and shrimp, vegetarian, the choices were endless.  Just as soon as one pie was finished, another was out of the oven – an endless flow.  You could even request a “special” pie and they would make it up.  We also had a simple mixed green salad, espresso and cappuccino and six flavors of gelato for dessert!

Saturday’s weather was just about perfect and the remainder of the boats arrived, the ships store, raffle prizes and silent auction were set up. Every year we open the raffle and silent auction up to the general public and it is interesting to see some of the strategies people use with their raffle tickets!  We did very well with our store and raffle and we thank the chapter members and many area merchants for their contribution to the raffle.  I believe we had a total of 50 prizes on raffle and 9 on silent auction.

We had many vintage cars on the lawn as well and that was a big draw.  Two of our chapter members brought car/boat combinations; many pictures were taken and the crowd continually flowed among the cars, boats on the lawn and boats in the water

Donahue’s Madison Beach Grille again provided wonderful hors devours and a buffet dinner.  From crab cakes, lobster mac and cheese, grilled flank steak, chicken, salmon, potatoes, salad, summer vegetables and two wonderful desserts – you definitely didn’t go hungry!  Good Medicine Rx from Southbury provided 70’s, 80’s and 90’s music during cocktails and dinner.

After dinner Chapter President Lynn McFarlin thanked the participants for bringing their wooden and classic boats.  Lynn explained that this year’s show had a smaller amount of boats due to vacations and other activities, but we still had a diversified selection with a few boats that had not been exhibited before. Lynn also thanked the many volunteers who, without their help, the show wouldn’t be the success that it is.  This is a very large undertaking and team work and coordination are definitely necessary!

Lynn advised that on Saturday September 29^th Chapter Member Charlie Hand will be conducting a Fall Cruise on the Connecticut River; more information will be forthcoming.  Our Annual Dinner will be in November at Gaetano’s Main Street Tavern – again – more information to follow.

Chief Judge, David McFarlin thanked the judges and explained the judging rules to the audience.  He said this was the first time that he could remember when all 12 of the boats that had registered to be judged won!  There were a number of first-time winners and needless to say – they were thrilled!

Directions to the Connecticut River Museum

 From I-95 North or South

Take Exit 66 to Route 9 North to Exit 3 Westbrook/Essex.  Turn left at the end of the ramp and then right to the light on West Ave.  Follow West Ave. to Prospect Street on the left to Methodist Hill.  Take the first right to Essex Square onto Main Street.  Follow Main Street to the ramp at the end of the road.

From Hartford

Take Route 9 South to Exit 3 Westbrook/Essex.  At the end of the ramp turn left under the overpass to the traffic light.  Turn left at the light onto West Avenue.  Follow West Ave. to Prospect Street on the left to Methodist Hill.  Take the first right to Essex Square onto Main Street.  Follow Main Street to the ramp at the end of the road.

Launching at the Essex Town Ramp

 The Essex town launch ramp is at the end of Main Street alongside the lawn of the Connecticut River Museum.  There is room for several boats to stage without blocking traffic; but we must launch in a manner so that the local law enforcement establishment is not irritated.  We ask that all participating boat owners drive up to the ramp and prepare your boat for launching while you are waiting for the boats ahead of you to launch; once your boat is launched have someone move your vehicle and trailer to the trailer parking area.  Do not leave your boat or vehicle and trailer unattended at or near the ramp.  There will be a launch team available to assist you.

Launching at Haddam Meadows State Park

 If you want to enjoy a ride on the River and launch and retrieve your boat in fresh water, you can use the State launch ramp at Haddam Meadows State Park (approximately 10 miles up river from Essex).  There is no fee, and you can leave your vehicles.  This is a concrete ramp with docks on both sides.  Be aware that the ramp may be busy during the weekend.  If you will need your vehicle during the weekend, you will have to make your own arrangements.

 From the South

Take Route 9 North to Exit 7 (Route 82).  At the “T” with Route 154, turn left (North) and stay on Route 154 until you see the sign for Haddam Meadows State Park on the right (approximately 3-4 miles).  Enter the Park, turn right and follow the road to the launch ramp.

From the North

Take Route 9 South to Exit 10.  Turn right (South) onto Route 154.  Stay on Route 154 until you see the sign for Haddam Meadows State Park on the left (approximately 6 miles).  Enter the Park, turn right and follow the road to the launch ramp.

Unfortunately, there is no parking available at the Connecticut River Museum.  The limited parking is reserved for handicapped access and the area is needed to park and arrange for displays that will be on the lawn.  To ensure a safe and enjoyable visitor experience, please do not leave unattended vehicles blocking the main gate or walkways into the museum.

 To follow are some very important “rules and regulations” concerning our 32^nd Annual Antique and Classic Boat Show and subsequent shows at the CT River Museum:

• The Connecticut River Museum is a “non-smoking” venue and as such, no smoking is permitted on the grounds, the docks or any buildings within the museum proper.
• For those individuals bringing a boat in on Friday July 13^th and placing it on the lawn, the museum has requested that boats being displayed on the lawn not arrive any earlier than 1:00 p.m.  SNEC will have a designated chapter member available to ensure that the placing of the boats on the lawn goes smoothly.  Boats may be brought in on Saturday from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.  Someone will be available to assist with the placement of boats on the lawn.
• Please be cognizant of the fact that the museum has just had their entrance and lawn redone, so we must be careful of sprinkler heads, plantings, etc.
• The Connecticut River Museum is the Permittee on any liquor served during our event and as such, no liquor may be brought in by individuals.  There will be a cash bar at the Friday night dinner as well as before, during and after the dinner and awards ceremony on Saturday.  Any additional liquor consumed must be purchased through the CT River Museum bartenders.
• No overnight sleeping will be allowed on participant’s boats.

Saturday April 21^st dawned bright and sunny with a slight wind and NO RAIN! By the end of the day the temperature was in the low 60’s and the sun had come out.

Approximately 40 Chapter members gathered at the Lay House on the grounds of the CT River Museum in Essex, CT around 9:00 a.m. for a meet and greet “coffee and”.  Chapter President Lynn McFarlin welcomed everyone and gave a quick overview of what would occur during the workshop day.

We all went down to the Museum Boat house for David McFarlin’s presentation on “Why Boats Sink”.

David is an Accredited Marine Surveyor and works for a large insurance company doing boat/yacht marine claims.  David’s presentation was definitely an eye-opener!  One won’t think there would be so many ways or issues that would cause a boat to sink. Great questions were asked and everyone came away with a better understanding of “Why Boats Sink”.

Next up was Schuyler Thomson’s demonstration on Rib Bending. Schuyler had fired up the steamer earlier in the day so he was all ready to show the group the fine art of bending ribs.  He had a canoe that he had started bending ribs for and the group was able to almost complete attaching the ribs to the strong-back. This was a great “hands on” activity and everyone had great fun participating.

Cliff McGuire joined us back at the Lay House and passed out information regarding Boating Safety.   We all enjoyed seeing Cliff as he has been feeling a little “under the weather” and he definitely enjoyed being with the group.

Pizza, salad and homemade cookies were served for lunch and it all disappeared very quickly.  DaVinci’s Pizza in Deep River was the provider of the delicious food.

Back to the Museum Boat House we went to listen to Brenda Milkofsy (CT River Museum Trustee) give a talk on Boat Designer Erie Way.  Again, a very informative session and we thank Brenda for her time.

Kathy Muller (Muller Boat Works, Sunapee, NH) was next up on the agenda and gave a very informative session on Varnishing.  Kathy is one of the foremost varnishers in the country and she is often asked to give demonstrations during the Antique Boat Show in Clayton, NY.  Great questions were asked and everyone came away with tips on how to varnish their boats – small things that you wouldn’t even think of.

Chapter member Chris Johnson brought his beautiful Shepherd and explained to the group on “How to Properly Set up a Trailer”.  Again, a very informative session.  Unfortunately for Chris, he got hung up in traffic and 3-1/2 hours travel time.
