52nd Annual Boat Show at the Antique Boat Museum-Clayton, NY

Lee and I journeyed up to the 52nd Annual Boat Show held in Clayton, NY the weekend of August 5-7.  If you have never been up to the Thousand Islands, this is a must to put on your “bucket list”!

437The show opened on Friday August 5th to heat, sun and humidity and lots of boats!  This year’s Marquee boat was the “Dispro” (i.e., the disappearing propeller boat) and they were well represented with approximately 21 boats of various lengths and manufacturers and years. Chapter members Gail and Wes Van Dine had their 1950 Greavette Dispro named “Bounty” displayed on land with a great collection of period memorabilia, seat cushions, etc.  All the Dispro’s exhibited, be it on the docks or on land, always had people milling about, taking pictures and speaking with the owners.  Ian Dickerson, an authority on Dispro boats, gave a very interesting talk and used the boats on land to show visitors the various differences between the manufacturers.

Saturday again dawned hot and sunny and despite that, there was a very good crowd throughout the day.  Judging started early and it was nice to see that there were exhibitors there who were experiencing their “first” Antique Boat Museum Show.  The “Youth Judging”, sponsored by Hagerty Insurance drew a large number of kids and it was great to see the next generation of boating enthusiasts!

Antique Boat America started the boat auction right on time and although it was hot, bidding was spirited and all but 3 boats sold.  The highlight of the auction was a 57 foot, 1924 Smith and Williams Motor Yacht named Kensington – a very large boat!

Sunday brought the awards ceremony and the Marquee was recognized throughout the ceremony.  I am pleased to say that Wes and Gail’s boat “Bounty” won for Best Canadian Boat Other Than A Shepherd – congratulations!  Our trip home was somewhat uneventful (with the exception of the 2 hour traffic delay) and Lee and I look forward to the 53rd annual show in 2017. – Bette Heinzman, Chapter Secretary

32nd Annual Mahogany Memories

Once again our fleet of mahogany and chrome will rendezvous on the  dock of the Connecticut River Museum in Essex, Connecticut.  This years show will be July 8-10, with a member BBQ on Friday evening, show open to the public on Saturday followed by dinner and awards.  Sunday we will cruise picturesque waters of the Connecticut River Valley.  Registration info is here: 2016 Mahogany Memories Registration Package.

2015 Mahogany Memories – Connecticut River Museum July 10-12

 “Mahogany Memories” is hosted by the Southern New England Chapter (SNEC) of The Antique and Classic Boat Society (ACBS). The show features some of the finest examples of wooden boats by builders such as Chris-Craft, Gar Wood, Century, Lyman, Elco, Penn Yan, Fay & Bowen and other distinguished non-wood builders such as Glasspar, Mullins, MFG and Feather Craft. We hope that you will enjoy looking at these magnificent mahogany boats and that they bring back memories of earlier days when wooden pleasure boats were a common sight on the water. Please take this opportunity to talk with the boat owners to learn more about the joys of using and preserving these beautiful “woodies” and other memorable classics!

ACBS Symposium and Workshop

The ACBS in conjunction with the Antique Boat Museum in Clayton, NY is hosting a symposium and workshop on May 8, 9 and 10th.  It will be held at the museum in Clayton, New York.

This year’s program will be centered on replanking your boat, whether it is replacing a single plank or total replanking.  The participants will have the opportunity of doing both carvel and lapstrake planking.  Steam bending and stain matching will also be included.  There will be boat rides and a tour of some of the boat collection that is not available to the public.   It will be both an educational and a very fun week end.

31st Annual Mahogany Memories

The Southern New England Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society

Presents the 30th Annual Mahogany Memories Antique & Classic Boat Show

July 11-13, 2014

The show takes place at the Connecticut River Museum on the scenic and historic waters of the southern Connecticut River in the town of Essex which has been voted one of the 10 best towns in the country.  The boat show has always been a showcase for antique and classic runabouts and this year will be no different.

Activities include a Friday night cookout, Saturday evening catered dinner with award ceremony, boating on the Connecticut River and an overall great time. Everyone is welcome to attend with or without a boat and all antique, classic and modern classic runabouts are welcome and encouraged to attend. Boat owners can choose to have their vessel judged to ACBS standards. Come and enjoy the beautiful scenery, stunning boats and great friendships!

We have decided to mix things up a little this year and find a way to get some of our boats away from the docks during the show so everyone can see them coming and going as well as maybe get a chance to go for a ride!   We will have drawings throughout the day where show attendees or the members of the public can win a ride in a classic.

We would like to hear from a few boat owners willing to participate with us in offering up some boat rides during the show.   If you are interested, please contact me and I can review the details with you.

If you have children or grandchildren in your family, then the Southern New England Chapter would like to invite them to become a “Youth Judge” and learn about boat judging at our July 12, 2014 show.  We will gather those interested at 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning and pass out  all of the required information to judge the boats. Lynn Dombroskas will be in charge of the children. We are able to accommodate 10 children.   The “Youth Judging” awards will be presented at the award ceremony Saturday night. This will be a fun experience for the kids – so… come one and all and become a “Youth Judge”!

Gathering at Vintage Boat Restoration

I am excited to announce that Jim Murdock has graciously offered to sponsor another club social at his facility in Bristol, CT on Saturday March 1st starting at 9:00 a.m. and ending around 3:00 p.m.

The boat social is intended to be an informal get-together to talk boats, engines and see Jim’s shop.  Currently there are 40 boats in the shop, ranging from a 1914 Goodhue and Hawkins to a 1957 BMW.  Jim and members of his staff will be available to answer your questions, give suggestions and generally allow us to have a great time in their shop.  You may be lucky enough to walk away with ideas and thoughts that might make your restoration or maintenance that much easier or better.

Seeing an old engine running on the bench and having the performance mapped through a lap top has got to be pretty amazing.

The chapter will provide “coffee” as well as pizza for lunch.  Jim’s wife Gail will also whip up some Blue Moon Stew.  Lunch will be served around 1:30 p.m. So that Bette knows how much food to order, please RSVP to her at (203) 264-5823 or email: bdbw3@sbcglobal.net no later than Friday February 21st.

Jim hopes to have the new sign out front done to make finding the shop a little bit easier this year.
